What is a Wheelchair Access Vehicle

Wheelchair accessible vehicles are commonly known and searched for as WAVs, wheelchair cars, motability cars, mobility vehicles, disabled cars, adapted cars and converted vehicles to name but a few. Basically they are vehicles adapted to enable a wheelchair user or those with impairment to travel in or drive a vehicle that suits their specific needs as a wheelchair, powerchair  or mobility scooter can be easily loaded into a car or van via a ramp or lift and takes into account the ability to fit in with their work and social needs for daily travel.

Adapted cars vary in size and shape to accommodate users with a disability or impairment and the layout depends on the converter and adaptations. Some are designed to carry a single wheelchair passenger and 2, 3, 4 or 5 seats. The vehicle model will either feature a lowered floor and wheelchair access ramp or, for more room, larger conversions can feature this or powered wheelchair lifts. Larger WAVs offer options for more space and/or the ability to carry more passengers or multiple wheelchairs.

The WAV design also allows disabled passengers and drivers who use mobility scooters to travel with their scooter and avoid the need to break down their appliance and lift heavy equipment into a boot or hatchback. The design allows a scooter to simply be driven or winched up the ramp.

Typical conversions types:

 - Lowered floor & wheelchair/scooter ramp

 - Rear electronic powered lift access vehicle

 - Standard height floor vehicle with raised roof (mainly larger lcv based vehicles)

Rarer adapted cars:

 - Drive from wheelchair

 - Driver transfer vehicle

 - Up front wheelchair passenger

 - Side entry access vehicle

WAV sizes

Small wheelchair accessible vehicles are readily available and these compact models are generally based on Renault Kangoo, Citroen Berlingo, Peugeot Partner, Fiat Doblo and similar. some micro models are available on the Peugeot Bipper, Fiat Qubo and Citroen Nemo.  These models generally feature a lowered floor and spring assisted ramp. some have a lightweight bi fold ramp. They generall have 1 rear seat but can occasionally feature 2 enabling them to accept a wheelchair passenger or mobility scooter and 4 people. These work really well for mobility scooter users or small families. Some of the Berlingo and Partner models have 5 seats and carry a wheelchair or mobility scooter by folding the  rear seat in the configeration. These are ideal for families as a second car and care home cars.

Medium size models are more suited for larger wheelchairs or mobility scooters or leaving more carry lugage for travelling. They regularly have 4 seats with 5/6 and 7 seater choices possible. These are ideal for expanding familes, carers and smaller care homes. Popular models here are converted Peugeot Expert, Volkswagen Caddy, Kia Sedona, Vauxhall Zafira, Fiat Scudo and short wheelbase versions of the Renault Trafic and VW Transporter/Caravelle. Depending on the conversion and number of passenger seats the wheelchair user can sit between or behind the rear seats. Most have a manual ramp system and lowered floor, although some come with electronic wheelchair lifts. The conversion features are broadly similar to the smaller WAVs.

Large WAVs are used where a space or larger numbers of wheelchair passengers or seated passengers is required and can offer vast lugage space for travelling. They are mostly used by large families, community travel, care homes and schools. some are converted to accessible day vans and campervans. The models most common in the mobility market are Renault Master, Peugeot Boxer, VW Transporter, Mercedes Sprinter and longer wheelbase Renault Trafic and Vauxhall Vivaro. They are usually equipped with heavy duty Ricon or Ratcliffe wheelchair lifts, floor tracking and removeable seating making flexible use of internal space as required.
